What is lomilomi nui?

Lomilomi is the traditional massage of Hawaii. “Lomi” roughly means to knead or stroke, and “nui” means great or whole. Lomilomi nui is the complete, deep massage.

I work not only with my hands but also with my forearms, in long, continuous, wave-like strokes that embrace the whole body at once. The rhythm echoes the ocean: no rushing, no interruptions, just one soft, unbroken flow. With warm, unscented coconut oil and quiet Hawaiian music.

I often use warm lava stones as well. Their even, deep warmth gently soaks into the muscles and helps you relax even further.

In the Hawaiian view, the body holds on to everything we have lived through: tension, fear, unspoken pain. Caring, attentive touch creates the space to let these go.

It feels like floating on a quiet lake, gently rocked by the water.

Aloha

The soul of the massage

In Hawaii, “aloha” is more than a greeting. It is a way of life: turning towards another person with love, respect and full attention. Every massage I give is given in this spirit.

We begin with a quiet moment. If you like, you can put into words what you would like from this session: rest, release, calm. It is never required, just an invitation, always in keeping with your own beliefs and your own world.

My path

15 years with lomilomi nui

I have been learning and practising this massage for 15 years. It was not a weekend course for me; it became part of a lifelong path. I trained with Witold Kucharczyk.

Lomilomi is the ancient method of Hawaiian healers. During the massage you can experience the philosophy of nature and the feeling for life that this culture stands for: harmony with nature, with other people and with ourselves.

Alongside lomilomi I have trained in other methods too. They all enrich my touch and help me attend to each guest individually.

Swedish massage · Craniosacral therapy · SomatoEmotional Release · Pranic healing · Holistic Pulsing

Over the years I have seen again and again that this massage reaches far deeper than skin and muscle. Guests often tell me that the weight of long-carried hurts, disappointments and failures felt lighter afterwards. Many have also said that the massage helped them make friends with themselves.

Many feel that it takes them back to a very early, primal sense of safety, as if a loving parent were rocking and holding them. In this state, body and soul can finally rest.

I am proud to say that several of my guests later set out on this path themselves and learned this wonderful method.

Besides massage, I am also a photographer. Behind the camera, just as beside the massage table, presence and attention matter most to me. You can see my photos here: byphosphoros.com

Who is it for?

If you are exhausted

If you are tense and overloaded, and it has been a long time since you truly rested.

If you are going through a hard time

After loss, disappointment or failure, when it helps to have someone by your side, even without words.

If you long to be cared for

If you are always the one looking after others, and now you would like someone to look after you.

If you want to feel at home in your body again

Attentive touch can help you feel good in your own skin again and accept your body with kindness.

Lomilomi is first and foremost about relaxation, calm and inner balance. It is not the right treatment for joint or muscle complaints; for those, please see a doctor or a medical massage therapist.

What to expect

1

Arrival

I welcome you with a cup of tea, and we talk for a few minutes: how you are and what you need right now.

2

Stillness and intention

In the warm, softly lit room we pause for a moment. If you wish, you can say what you are bringing with you.

3

The massage

You lie on a heated massage table, so you stay comfortably warm throughout. Warm, unscented coconut oil, long flowing strokes, quiet music. You don’t need to talk, just let go.

4

Coming back

There is no need to hurry. Stay a few more minutes with a glass of water or a cup of tea.

Feelings that may come up

Sometimes feelings surface during the massage: tears, memories, or a deep, quiet relief. This is natural and completely fine. It is also fine if you simply fall asleep.

How to prepare

Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting oily, as I use plenty of oil. I work with unscented coconut oil, which is gentle on the skin and leaves no strong scent. If you are sensitive to coconut, please let me know in advance.

Avoid a heavy meal right before.

Some oil may get into your hair. If you have plans afterwards, bring a hair tie or a scarf.

If you can, plan nothing afterwards. Let the calm last into the evening.

Safety and respect

I know that trusting yourself to a stranger’s hands is no small thing. At your first session we always take time to talk, and during the massage you can tell me at any moment if something isn’t comfortable.

Your intimate areas stay covered at all times. If you feel more comfortable, you can keep your underwear on. Here, everything is about you feeling safe.

Lomilomi does not hurt. It is soft yet deep touch. If you would like more or less pressure, just say so.

Four-hands lomilomi

Two pairs of hands, one flow

The four-hands massage is given together with my partner, Édua Vad Virág. The two of us hold you at the same time, in harmonised movements, like two waves running in the same direction.

The mind cannot follow the movement of four hands. It gives up trying, and the body can sink into an even deeper release. Many describe it as the most complete care they have ever received.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from a regular massage?

Lomilomi doesn’t work on one body part at a time; it embraces the whole body at once with long, flowing strokes of the hands and forearms. It pays attention not only to the muscles but also to how present you are in your body.

Do I need to talk during the massage?

No. You can surrender to the silence, the music and the touch. If you do want to say something, you can at any time.

Isn’t it too intimate?

Yes, it is intimate. Intimate because you let someone close to you, close to your soul. You show your tiredness and your vulnerability, and you let someone take care of you. But this intimacy is not sexual. Lomilomi is respectful touch that keeps clear boundaries: your intimate areas stay covered at all times, and you can speak up whenever something isn’t comfortable.

What will you think if my body isn’t perfect?

Nothing that would hurt you. Over the years I have met many kinds of bodies: young and older, slim and fuller, with scars, stretch marks and the marks of a life lived. During the massage I don’t look at you or judge you; I pay attention and take care of you. Many people experience here, for the first time, that their body is good as it is and deserves loving touch.

How much of me will be uncovered?

In lomilomi the draping is lighter than usual, but your intimate areas stay covered throughout. If you prefer, you can keep your underwear on.

Does the massage hurt?

No. It is soft yet deep touch. I always adjust the pressure to you.

What if I start crying?

That is completely fine. Feelings can come up during the massage, and there is room for them here. You don’t need to explain anything.

When should I not come for a massage?

If you have a fever, acute inflammation, a fresh injury, a skin condition, thrombosis, or are in the first trimester of pregnancy, please check with your doctor first or choose another date.

How can I pay?

In cash or by bank transfer.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you can’t make it, please let me know by phone or message at least 24 hours in advance, so I can offer the time to someone else.
